Our Lady's Island
The island is situated in a small saline lake connected to the mainland by a short causeway.
The lake was known as Lough Togher - the Lake of the Causeway - and is separated from the sea by a sandbar at Carnsore Point.
On one side of the the island is a large area of flat grass which is used for parking cars during the pilgrimage season.

At the land side of the island is an outdoor altar sitting up against the remains of an old castle.
The lake is an important habitat for birds and is now a recognised bird sanctuary.

One of only two intact windmills in Ireland. Built in 1846, the mill was used until 1936 and was renovated in the 1950s.

Nearby Tacumshane Lake is a favourite with bird watchers as it attracts some rare American waders in Autumn, as well as internationally important concentrations of Bewick's swans, Brent geese, wigeon, oystercatchers, golden plover and lapwing.

Johnstown Castle
The harmony between great Victorian revival castles and their surrounding ornamental grounds is rarely seen to such perfection as at Johnstown Castle.

The mature woodlands and lakes of this demesne provide the perfect setting for this turreted, battlemented and machicolated castle of
gleaming silver-grey ashlar, built between 1810 and 1855 and incorporating part of a more ancient castle.
